71.58 % voters seal fate of 204 in Mormugao

Team HeraldVASCO: With the conclusion of the panchayat polls on Sunday, the electorate from all seven panchayat wards (excluding ward number 5 and 6 of Sancoale) under Mormugao taluka sealed the fate of the candidates. An estimated of 71.58 percent voters have cast their ballot and have sealed the fate of 204 candidates who were in fray for the 61 wards in the seven panchayat bodies, excluding ward number 5 and 6 of Sancoale as the elections there will be held on July 1, (as per HC order). Polling was held in a free, fair and peaceful manner with no report of incidents across 71 polling centres in Mormugao taluka. Polling started at 8 am with people turning out in huge numbers in the first two hours. However, due to rains people took time to come out of their homes due to which voting percent went down in the afternoon at all centres, however after lunch hours as rains subsided voting picked up, reflecting the enthusiasm as aspirations of the rural masses. According to Satish Prabhu, the returning officer for Mormugao taluka, of the 63 wards in all the seven panchayat bodies, 61 went for polls on Sunday, while voting in the remaining two wards will be held on July 1. He said that of the 30,494 total voters, 27435 cast their votes. Meanwhile, the fate of 36 candidates from 11 wards of Chicalim panchayat have been sealed with average voting percentage there was recorded at 68.39 percent. In Chicolna-Bogmalo, the fate of 22 candidates for 7 wards have been sealed with average voting percent there was recorded at 77.49. In Sancoale out of 11 wards, elections in 9 wards were held, where the overall voting was recorded at 73.41 percent. In Cortalim, the average voting percentage was recorded at 71.04 percent. In the newly formed Quelossim panchayat, the voting was recorded high as compared to other seven panchayats under Mormugao Taluka. Here 79.70 percent cast their votes. In Velsao-Pale-Issorcim panchayat, the voting percent was recorded at 70.50 percent. Similarly, 67.43 percent voting was recorded in the Cansaulim-Arossim-Cuelim Panchayat which is considered as the most active rural village in Mormugao taluka. In Chicalim Panchayat there are 7,812 voters out of which 5343 voters including 2647 male and 2696 females cast their vote. Highest voting here was held in ward number 7 with 86.30 percent while ward number 8 saw lowest voter turnout with only 40.59 percent. In all 9 wards of Sancoale Panchayat that went for polls out of total 11 wards (two wards including ward 5 and 6 election will be held on July 1 2017 as per HC order), out of total 13,188 voters 9681 voters came out to vote for their candidate. Highest voting here was in ward number 4 with 84.23 percent while ward number 1 which consists of MES college residential area as well as BITS Pilani campus saw lowest voter turnout with only 44.70 percent
