71 deaths, 3496 cases, COVID sets new records

PANJIM: COVID-19 continued to hit Goa as 71 more people lost their lives, including a 28-year-old woman, due to the infection, taking the mortality count to 1,443. On Wednesday, 42 patients succumbed to the virus, while 27 deaths of Tuesday – the day that had already reported 52 causalities – were added to the list.  

The State also recorded a grim high of 3,496 fresh infections on Wednesday, by far the highest single day spike. With this, the coronavirus caseload has risen to a staggering 1,04,398, further burdening the already crumbling health infrastructure. 

The only relief was that 2,192 patients were declared recovered. This is the highest single-day recovery so far. As on date 74,991 patients have been declared cured by the health authorities, at a recovery rate of 71.83 per cent. The State’s total active case tally stood at 27,964.

Of the 71 deaths, Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) reported 45 deaths, while 20 died in the South Goa District Hospital (SGDH). There are two deaths reported in North Goa District Hospital and one each at Chicalim, Curchorem and Hospicio. 

There were two deaths on April 28 and May 1, respectively, however, they have been declared in Wednesday’s mortality bulletin. 

There are two patients who died even after taking both doses of the vaccine, while there are seven who got infected after the first dose and later succumbed to the infection. 

The first five days of May, have reported 13,346 cases, which means a daily average of 2,669.  On Wednesday, 266 patients opted for hospitalisation, while 2,592 preferred home isolation.
