PANJIM: Nearly 7300 motorists have been booked for violating the number plate norms in the first four months of 2019.
SP Traffic Dinraj Govenker informed that police has taken the matter seriously of motorists driving and riding vehicles without number plates of improper number plates.
He said “We have noticed that despite the standard norms in place for installation of number plates, vehicle owners modify their number plates. Some of the two-wheelers put up number stickers on the mud guards. All such violations will be booked.”
When pointed out that a number of vehicles specially two-wheelers install the number plates in front but desist from doing on the rear, Govenker said “Our personnel have taken note of the same and all such cases are being booked. We have initiated action against the offenders as per the laws and in accordance with the Motor Vehicles Act rules.”
Interestingly, since the time Traffic Sentinel Scheme has become popular and those registered on the App have been uploading photographs, the number of vehicles either modifying their number plates or desisting from installing the number plates has increased.
Data shows that there more than double the increase in the number of motorists booked for the offence between 2016 and 2018. While in 2016 10996 cases were booked for the offence, in 2017 18507 motorists were booked and in 2018 25574 were booked for violating the rules. This year in the first four months police have booked 7298 cases of number plate violations.
