8.41 million tonnes of coal imported in this fiscal year: RS tells Faleiro

Union Minister Joshi said coal is kept under Open General License (OGL) and consumers are free to import coal from the source of their choice

PANJIM: Approximately 8.41 million tonnes of coal was imported by various private players in Goa through Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) during the ongoing financial year, the Rajya Sabha was told on Monday. 

In a written reply submitted by Union Minister for Coal and Mines Pralhad Joshi, it is also said that MPT has not put any requirement for doubling of railway line and hence the quantum of coal to be transported after doubling of track is not envisaged at this stage. 

As per the information provided to the Question tabled by Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Luizinho Faleiro, for the year 2020-21, a total of 9.30 million tonnes of coal was transported through MPT, while for the current financial year, till February 2022, a total of 8.41 million tonnes of coal is been handled. 

The JSW Steel Ltd has handled the maximum of 6.01 million tonnes of coal till February, this year as against 7.07 million tonnes it handled last financial year. 

The other coal handlers at MPT included Vedanta Ltd, Bengal Energy, SLR Metalics, Adani Enterprise, BMM Ispat Pvt Ltd, Goa Sponge, Indian cane Power Ltd, West Coast Paper Mills, Ambey Metalics and Shradha Ispat. 

Joshi said that as per current import policy, coal is kept under Open General License (OGL) and consumers are free to import coal from the source of their choice as per their contractual prices on payment of applicable duty.
