8-Year-Old Goan Chess Prodigy Prayank Gaonkar Clinches Runner-Up at Commonwealth Chess Championship 2025

Master Prayank Pradeep Gaonkar from Kajugatto, Sanguem, has brought pride to Goa and India by finishing second at the Commonwealth Chess Championship 2025, held from November 8 to 16 in Malaysia. Competing in the Under-8 Open Category, the 8-year-old secured an impressive 6.5 out of 9 points, showcasing extraordinary skill and determination while representing India.

A Class 3 student at Monivikas English High School, Prayank balances academics with his passion for chess. He started playing at the age of five and has been mentored by coach Prakash Vikram Singh at the Chess Guru Academy in Margao.

Prayank’s achievement reflects not only his talent but also the steadfast support of his family. Over the years, he has competed in international tournaments across Georgia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, and several Indian cities, earning multiple accolades along the way.

Continuing his remarkable journey, Prayank is set to participate in another international chess tournament in Thailand this week, further cementing his reputation as one of India’s brightest young chess talents.
