80 quizzed in Merces panch ‘suicide’ case

PANJIM: As many as 80 individuals including Wilson Godinho and Tahir Virani have been quizzed in connection with the death of MGP leader and ex-Merces sarpanch (late) Prakash Naik. Wilson, brother of Minister Mauvin Godinho, has been interrogated twice.

The Crime Branch (CB) sleuths took over the probe on January 29, 12 days after Old Goa police initially investigated the case as ‘unnatural death’ and later registered an FIR for abetment to suicide against the two men.

“Investigation is being carried out extensively. Till date, about 70 to 80 persons have been questioned including Wilson, Tahir and family members of the deceased. We have still not come to any conclusion but so far, there is no evidence against the persons named in the FIR,” a senior officer told Herald.

In the High Court of Bombay at Goa, the CB had last month submitted that they have identified ‘suspects’. However, their details have not been shared so far. “Everyone is a suspect. Probable suspects are many. We are probing the case further,” he said.

Herald on Friday reported that in the wake of evidences gathered, the arrest of Wilson and Tahir is unlikely.
