 Canacona Congress meet today

CANACONA: Meeting of Canacona Congress block will be held at Chaudi on March 9 evening to chalk out Padyatra by the Congress party. According to Canacona Block Congress President Elvis Fernandes, the meeting will be held in Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) hall, Chaudi, on March 9 at 4 pm and the agenda of the meeting will be to discuss about the Padyatra. Fernandes has appealed to all members of the block committee, PCC, youth committee, mahila committee and Congress workers to attend the meeting and express their views.
Beat Glaucoma package 
PANJIM: The 6th World Glaucoma Week will be observed at the ophthalmology department at Manipal hospital, from March 9 to 15 with the launch of their BIG–Beat invisible glaucoma campaign.
The department would be supporting the ‘BIG’ global campaign with a special glaucoma detection package from March 8 to April 31. The package will constitute vision testing, eye pressure measurement, gonioscopy, slit lamp examination and retina examination. 
SAIL chief visits GSL
PANJIM: C S Verma, Chairman Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) visited Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) on March 6. This was his maiden visit after he took over as the SAIL Chairman. During the visit he had discussions with RAdm (Retd) Shekhar Mital NM CMD GSL on areas of mutual cooperation. Verma who is also the Chairman SCOPE, was conducted around the shipyard. 
Later, Verma visited INS Sumedha, indigenously designed in house and built by GSL for the Indian Navy.
Aguiar’s ‘Saanz’ releases on March 22
PANJIM: ‘Saanz’ a new book on poems by John Aguiar will be released at a function on March 22, at 4.30 pm at Goa Chamber of Commerce Hall in Panjim.
The book will be released by Adv Uday Bhembre, a well known Konkani writer, activist and  ex-MLA.
Sahitya Akademi award winner and Editor of Bimb, Dilip Borkar will speak on the book, while IPP of GC(I), Manguerish Pai Raikar will be the special invitee.
This is Aguiar’s third second book on poems after Paulam and Gulmohar. The is penned by Dilip Borkar and the book is published by Deepanjali Prakashan and has a collection of 100 poems. Aguiar has dedicated the book to his friends and well wishers. 
St Mary’s Mapusa wins science expo
CALANGUTE: St Mary’s Convent HS, Mapusa, bagged the first place in the inter-school science exhibition organized at Little Flower of Jesus HS, Calangute. St Britto HS, Mapusa, were the runners-up, while Holy Cross HS, Siolim and Holy Cross HS, Bastora, claimed the third place and consolation prizes respectively. Calangute Sarpanch Geeta Parab was the chief guest at the function and gave away the prizes in the presence of Headmistress Sr Lumen Pereira, Ana Maria D’Souza, Surendra Nagvekar and PTA executive members. Nine schools took part in the exhibition which was organized by Science Club members of the school under the guidance of Martha Monteiro, Nellyyesha Florindo and Ivone Pereira. St Xavier’s College, Mapusa, Vice Principal Ursula Baretto, Our Lady of Divar HS, Divar, Headmaster John Fernandes and Nefertiti, teacher of Holy Family HS, Porvorim, judged the exhibits.
Una O’Brien visits Margao hospital
PANJIM: Una O’Brien, Permanent Secretary, Department of Health, UK visited Apollo Victor hospitals, Margao along with the British Trade Commissioner and Secretary.
The team was welcomed by the Director Operations – Varun Albuquerque, Medical Director Dr Robert D’Costa, Administrator Rummy Rodrigues. O’Brien inaugurated a medical check-up camp of the Silver Star Mobile Diabetes Unit there. After the inauguration O’Brien was then oriented to the state of the art equipment and facilities available at Apollo Victor Hospital. 
Science Day at Dhempe College
PANJIM: DCT’s Dhempe College Mira Mar, through its Physic’s Quarks Club, celebrated Science Day on February 28, with a talk on exploring the young universe by eminent Goan Astrophysicist, Dr Vithal Tilvi from Mitchell Institute of Fundamental Physics and Astronomy, Texas USA, through ‘Meet the Scientist’ live video interaction programme. Dr Tilvi is a team member in the discovery of most distance new galaxy.

Dak and Pension Adalat
PANJIM: The Department of Post will organize Divisional Dak Adalat and Pension Adalat on March 27, at 10 am in the office of the Sr Supdt of post offices, Goa Division, Mapusa. Complaints and grievances not replied within six week will be considered for settlement in this Adalat. Complainants should send their application along with copy of original complaint to ASP(HQ), O/o Sr Supdt. of Post Offices, Goa Division, Mapusa 403507, by March 21.
Tanker goods theft accused arrested 
VASCO: Mormugao police on Friday night placed under arrest all 16 accused from Khariwada-Vasco, who stole oil and scrap material from the Pratibha Bheema oil tanker anchored off the Panjim port.
Speaking to Herald, Mormugao police investigating officer Sub Inspector Shailesh Narvekar stated that on Friday evening, Costal Police Sub Inspector Terence Vaz handed over all the 16 accused to the Mormugao police for further investigation.
 The Indian Coast Guard and the Costal police headed by PSI Terence Vaz had  on Friday nabbed 16 persons belonging to two gangs from Khariwada, while allegedly stealing oil and scrap from the Pratibha Bheema oil tanker, which is presently anchored off the Panjim port.
Cameras stolen from Porvorim shop
PORVORIM: About 20 cameras worth about Rs 1.96 lakh have been reported stolen from a shop at Porvorim.
In his complaint, Dattaram Shetye informed Porvorim police that the burglary took place sometime between 6 pm on Thursday and 9.30 am on Friday, when burglars entered his shop at Alto Porvorim by break opening the iron grill and glass of window and stole Sony 16 cybershot cameras and 4 Sony Alfa cameras 
Plaint filed in death of worker
VALPOI: A worker died of injuries he had sustained while working at the new community health centre at Sattari.
Valpoi police said a complaint has been filed against three officials of a Porvorim-based company involved in the construction work, for failing to provide safety equipment to the deceased worker, Govind Vernekar.
The incident took place on January 21 at about 8.30 pm, when Vernekar, while working for the company at new the CHC hospital building, fell off a ladder and sustained grievous injuries to his spinal cord. He died on March 6 while undergoing medical treatment at GMC hospital at Bambolim.
Austrian found dead in Anjuna
TIVIM: A 57-year-old Austrian national was found dead on a small pathway near a super market in Anjuna on Friday.Anjuna police identified the deceased as Helmetrao and has sent his body to the mortuary at the Goa Medical College Hospital at Bambolim.
Offence registered for loud music
TIVIM: Acting on the orders of the Pernem Judicial Magistrate First Class, Pernem police have registered an offence against the owners and managers of three seaside resorts along the Pernem coast for playing loud music beyond permissible limits.
The three resorts in Ashwem have been accused of playing loud music exceeding the permitted levels and for failing to obtain prior permission from the appropriate authority. While one resort in Ashvem was found playing loud music on January 31, the other two resorts were accused of playing loud music two days later.
All three resorts have been booked under Section 15 of Environment Protection Act 1986 and Section 4 and 5 of the Noise Pollution Amendment Rule 2010.
