PORVORIM: A 34-year-old woman from Mencurem-Bicholim died on International Women’s Day, while her husband and their two children were injured when a truck rammed into their scooter near the Guirim cross on Saturday night.
The incident caused tension till late Saturday night as agitated onlookers damaged the truck and tried to set it ablaze.
According to Mapusa police, the incident took place at around 9 pm, when a scooter (GA-04-B-5901) was proceeding towards Panjim, slowed down to negotiate a speed breaker at Guirim, when the truck (GA-06-T-2514) rammed into the rear of the scooter, before hitting a roadside coconut tree.
Sudesh Shetye, his wife, Santoshi, and their two minor children sustained injuries in the mishap, while the truck driver and other occupants in the truck fled from the scene after the accident, said Mapusa PI Tushar Vernekar.
A crowd which gathered at the site damaged the truck and tried to set it on fire. A Mapusa police team rushed to the site to diffuse the tension.
PI Vernekar told Herald that the injured have been admitted to Goa Medical College hospital at Bambolim for treatment, where Santoshi later died of injuries.
The situation was tense till late night with an agitated crowd demanding the immediate arrest of the truck driver. Calangute MLA Michael Lobo also rushed to the site at night to take stock of the situation. Mapusa police is investigating the case.
