Fr Ave Maria felicitated

PANJIM: Fr Ave Maria served as a dedicated pastor in St Elizabeth’s Parish, Ucassaim for the last 3 years. Gitwana ~ a three-day cultural festival of song and dance was conceptualized and made a reality by him and is being staged at Ucassaim Church for the fourth time. In appreciation of his service, the parishioners of St Elizabeth’s Church, Ucassaim, felicitated Fr Ave Maria on May 29. 

Theft at Sangolda house

CALANGUTE: Cash and gold ornaments worth about Rs 38,000 were stolen from a house at Sangolda on Wednesday.

According to Calangute Police, Renuka R Marathe of Sangolda complained that some persons entered her house and stole gold ornaments like mangalsutra, daul and cash of Rs 3,000, totally worth about Rs 38,000. Head Constable Suryakant Shetye is investigating the case.

Farmers entrepreneurship workshop 

PANJIM: Farmers have to be encouraged so that a large number of people can get employment, said PWD Minister Sudin Dhavalikar. He was speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural function of the farmers’ entrepreneurship workshop organized by SGZP. Dhavalikar complimented Zilla Panchayat for organizing the melawa. Earlier Wilfred D’Sa ZP member welcomed. Various machines like areca nut plates maker, potato chip maker, papad maker, paddy thrasher, etc, were donated by Rotary Club of Margao Midtown, Rotary Club of Frenso California, USA and Rotary Foundation. The shed to these machines was provided by Wilfred D’Sa. Later Fr Victor Rodrigues, Parish Priest of Nuvem blessed the premises. Local MLA Mickky Pacheco was the guest of honour and complimented the Rotary Club. SGZP Chairperson Nelly Rodrigues explained the significance of the project while Anita Karambalkar Director of AIMS introduced the project. Director of Agriculture S Tendulkar explained the various schemes of the department to the 500-odd farmers present. Dr Jorson Fernandes appealed to farmers to make use of the machines. SGZP CEO K V Signapurkar, CAO Sunita Marathe and ZP members were present on the dais. ZP member Cintia D’Silva proposed the vote of thanks. 

INIFD-Goa courses in June

Three-day meditation courses

PANJIM: Goa Vipassana Samiti is organizing two, 3-day residential Vipassana meditation courses in June. Bal Bhavan staff accorded send off

PANJIM: Anand Narvenkar, Sr Instructor (Creative Craft) of Bal Bhavan Panjim, was given a send off on May 31 on superannuation at a function at Bal Bhavan. Chairperson Kunda Chodankar, highlighted the contribution and dedicated work of Narvenkar during his 27 years of service. 

Vice Chairman Ravindra Amonkar, Director Santosh Amonkar, Programme Officer Shashikant Punaji and Assistant Accounts Officer L V Manerkar also spoke.

Replying, Narvenkar said that working with the children creates interest in life and he tried his best to give maximum knowledge in creative craft.

Belgaum native ends life

PERNEM: A 24-year-old native of Belgaum who was residing at Konadi-Devsu, Pernem, reportedly committed suicide at her residence on Thursday. According to Pernem Police, Renuka Talwar was found hanging at her residence and the body has been preserved in GMC morgue.

Book of lyrics released

PORVORIM: A book containing the lyrics of 150 songs by renowned Konkani singer late Alfred Rose, compiled by St Rita Chapel Chaplain Fr Joaquim Fernandes, was released at Carona-Aldona by Juliana Fernandes, mother of Fr Joaquim, during a Konkani drama staged on the occasion of the feast at Carona. Singer Lawry Travasso spoke on late Alfred Rose, who hailed from Lankdem-Aldona, and his unique music. Fr Fernandes said it took him three years to compile the book and that he took permission from Rita Rose to publish it.

PANJIM: The results of All India Pre-Veterinary Test 2013 conducted by the Veterinary Council of India, New Delhi, on May 11 has been declared. Mayem locals want trees pruned

MAYEM: Residents of Mayem have requested the Mayem Panchayat and forest authorities to prune the overgrown trees along the Kelbaiwada-Mayem-Poira road stretch. According to villagers, a large number of dry branches are hanging precariously over the road from Kelbaiwada to Poira, endangering pedestrians and vehicles. Residents claimed that the overgrown trees have already claimed one life in the recent past ~ that of Digambar Hoble, a resident of Mayem, when a branch fell on him while he was returning home on his two-wheeler. 

Speed breakers at Verem, Vagurme

PANJIM: The District Magistrate, North Goa has ordered the construction of hump-type speed breaker in the jurisdiction of Village Panchayat Verem-Vagurme in Ponda taluka. 

In Parwada-Vagurme, near the hotel of Narshiv Naik, near Manohar Pernis house. In Vagurme, near Kelbai Devasthan. 

One near Kelbai Devasthan and other one near bus stop about 10 mts away from Khandepar Junction. In Chafebhat Savoi-Verem, near Govt Primary School Vagurme, near KRSS High School and one about 10 mts away from the junction towards Marcel side.    

Construction of speed breakers

PANJIM: District Magistrate North Goa has ordered the construction of three hump-type speed breakers. The first one about 5 mts away from the junction towards Ucassaim Church; second one about 5 mts away from the junction towards Succorro side and the third one about 5 mts away from the junction (Taliwada) towards Mapusa side in the jurisdiction of Village Panchayat of Ucassaim-Paliem-Punola in Bardez taluka.

Sugar for cardholders

PANJIM: 500 grams of levy sugar per person will be distributed during the month of June to the families of Below Poverty Line (BPL), Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) and Annapurna (ANP). The fair price shop owners are directed to lift the stock of the levy sugar immediately. 

Literary workshop in city

PANJIM: Institute Menezes Braganza, Panjim is organizing a literary workshop in three categories ~ story (katha), essay (nibandh) and poetry (kavita) for youth writers between the 16 to 35 years on June 21 and 22. The workshops will be conducted separately at three different places of Institute Menezes Braganza. Food and refreshment will be served by the organizers and participation certificates will be given. Admissions to JNV Valpoi

VALPOI: Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Valpoi, a residential co-educational CBSE school, has invited applications for admission to Class XI Humanities/Arts stream.

Ex-Servicemen Rules amended

PANJIM: The government has amended the Ex-Servicemen (Re-deployment in the Goa General Services and Posts) Rules in order to bring the paramilitary forces under the ambit of the rules thereby making them eligible for all facilities available to ex-servicemen of the armed forces.

The amendment published in the Official Gazette amends the definition of ‘Ex-servicemen’ to include those who have served in Central Armed Forces such as Central Reserve Police Force, Border Security Force, Central Industrial Security Force, Indo-Tibetan Border Police and Sashastra Seema Bal.

Following the notification, personnel who served in the above organizations will be eligible for certain relaxations for appointments in Group ‘C’ or Group ‘D’ posts in Goa General Services.  

Two injured in Malim mishap

PORVORIM: A 50-year-old pedestrian from Malim and a motorcycle rider from Nerul were injured in a road accident near Sai Temple at Malim Jetty.

According to Porvorim Police, Rama Naik of Karwar complained that Rajdeep Naik was proceeding on his motorcycle (GA-03-Q-6758) from Porvorim towards Betim when his motorcycle dashed against the pedestrian, Mohan Naik.

Police said Mohan sustained head injuries, while the motorcycle rider was also injured in the accident. Head Constable S D Dessai is investigating the case.

Shop burgled at Vasco

VASCO: Mobile phones worth around Rs 14,700 were stolen from a shop at Municipal Market, Vasco.

According to Vasco Police, Muktum Hussain Sayyad of Pixe Dongre, Vasco, complained that between 10.30 pm on June 4 and 9 am on June 5, some person entered his shop at municipal market, Vasco, by breaking the latch of the door and decamped with eight mobile phones worth Rs 14,700. PSI Direndra Naik is investigating the case.

Body recovered at Vasco

VASCO: An unidentified male body was found floating in the water near the passenger jetty at Harbour on Thursday.

According to Harbour Police, the deceased was reported to be between 45 to 55 years of age and the body has been sent to Hospicio morgue in Margao for post-mortem. PSI Shailesh Narvekar is investigating the case.

Rains lash Canacona

CANACONA: Rains finally lashed Canacona taluka on Thursday night and 231.10 mm of rainfall was recorded till midnight. As a result of the heavy rains, the Chapoli Dam recorded higher water levels. According to reports, Karwar district too witnessed heavy rainfall on Friday.

PONDA: Criticising politicians for failing to resolve problems faced by Hindus in the country, Hindu leaders on Friday chided Bharatiya rulers for taking prompt decisions on matters pertaining to cricket, films and wealth.

“Minority Hindus in foreign countries fight for their rights, while the majority Hindus in Bharat do not fight for their rights. This is a strange thing riddle,” stated Swami Kumaranand from Malaysia, on the second day of All India National Hindu Convention at Ramnathi-Ponda.

“The Bharatiya rulers can take prompt decisions on matters related to cricket, films and wealth; however, they do not take decision on Hindu problems,” said Kumaranand.

The five-day convention was inaugurated on Thursday and is jointly organised by Hindu Janajagruti Samiti and Pedne Navnirman Samiti.

Builder arrested,  released on bail

PANJIM: Panjim police Friday arrested a builder for attempting to create communal tension by allowing a JCB excavator driver to level a part of the ground at the foot of Altinho hill where a Cross stands. 

The man identified as Rajesh Shet, who is owner of a proposed hotel which is coming up there, was arrested and released on bond later in the evening. Corporation of City of Panjim (CCP) Mayor Surendra Furtado decried the attempt by Shet to create communal tension. 

Earlier, nearly 100 locals surrounded the JCB excavator bearing registration number GA-07-C-5132 forcing police and CCP officials to rush to the spot to calm down the situation. Shet was immediately placed under arrested and the JCB was confiscated by the police. CCP, revoked the construction license on the spot, for violating the conditions.  “The construction license had a condition to keep the slope where the Cross stands, intact. But the builder violated the norm. He is involved in hill cutting and attempting to create communal tension,” the Mayor told reporters. 

The PDA has also reportedly revoked the license. The residents also complained the underground parking area of the hotel building does not have the capacity of parking vehicles as was shown in the design to the local authorities. “The parking area showed 75 car parking but it hardly has space for five vehicles,” said one of them. 

An angry local said, “He tried to bulldoze God.” Furtado alleged the whole construction is illegal.

Burglars steal transformer oil 

BICHOLIM: In an unusual incident, burglars stole transformer oil from a running electrical transformer, causing the transformer to shut down near Zantye College at Sarvan-Bicholim.

In a complaint, Sanquelim Assistant Engineer Shailesh Burye informed Bicholim Police that the incident had taken place on June 5 at about 10.30 pm, when burglars stole the transformer oil from the running electrical transformer, causing a loss of about Rs 73,000 and causing the transformer to fail.

Police has booked an offence under Section 379 IPC and Head constable A D Gauns in investigating the case.

Labourer commits suicide  

CALANGUTE: A 45-year-old Kannadiga labourer employed at a construction site in Saligao committed suicide on Friday.

According to Calangute police, the body of Burunasaab Mulla Aminasab, who was residing at Panjim, was found hanging from a cashew tree on a hillock near Mae de Deus Church at Saligao.

Calangute Police has registered the death under Section 174 CrPC and PSI Mahesh Gaonkar is investigating the case.

Police register offence of kidnap 

OLD GOA: A woman has accused a man from Chimbel of kidnapping her minor daughter on Thursday evening.

In her complaint, the mother stated that the accused had kidnapped her minor daughter and had taken her to an unknown destination. 

Old Goa police has registered the offence under Section 363 r/w 34 IPC and Section 8(2) of Goa Children’s Act and PSI R N Shirodkar is investigating the case.

Antruz Patrakar Sangh anniversary 

PONDA: The Antruz Patrakar Sangh (Ponda) will celebrate its first anniversary on Sunday in the GVMs hall of Almeida High School at 4.30 pm.

PWD Minister Sudin Dhavalikar will be the chief guest, while Ponda MLA Lavoo Mamledar will preside over the function. Ponda Municipal Council Chairperson Dr Radhika Nayak and Dharbandora Deputy Collector Sagun Velip will be special invitees.
