MARGAO: Margao MLA Digambar Kamat has come out strongly in favour of rehabilitation of the Moti Dongor residents, even as he has called a meeting with the affected people to take up their cause before the government.
“I feel the only option left before the government and the authorities is to rehabilitate the residents. The government had issued two notifications in the past notifying Moti Dongor as a slum. This question has not been given any thought till date,” Kamat said.
Replying to a question on the exercise of serving demolition notices carried out by the Administrator of Communidades, South Zone, Kamat said the Communidade is initiating action as per law, but hastened to remind that there are two notifications issued under the Slum Development Act providing basic amenities to the inhabitants.
“I have called a meeting with the beleaguered residents to take up their issue with the government and the authorities. Successive governments have made available basic amenities to the inhabitants. Some of these structures have been existing at Moti Dongor before I became a councilor in 1985,” he said.
Migrant-inhabited Moti Dongor locality has been Kamat’s political stronghold. He had swept the polls atop the hillock and the votes polled from Moti Dongor area proved very decisive in his overall electoral margin.
