PANJIM: No more wasting a year in Class IX and XI. The Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (GBSHSE) has proposed that students who fail in more than two subjects or all the subjects, will be allowed to appear for the supplementary examination to be held in the month of June.
If the proposal, which would be placed before the Board’s executive committee meeting on June 21, clears through, then the same would be implemented from the next academic year onwards.
As per the current Goa Board norms, only those students of Class IX and XI are eligible to answer the supplementary exams who fail in one or two subjects out of the total curriculum.
The Board now wants to extend the facility even to those students who fail in more than two subjects to ensure that their academic year is not wasted.
Speaking to HERALD, Goa Board Chairman Ramakrishna Samant said the proposal is such that students who fail either in two subjects or above or in all the subjects will be allowed to answer the supplementary examination. “The proposal has been made following requests from parents who have approached the schools and colleges. The proposal would be discussed during the executive committee meeting,” he said.
Samant said that if the proposal works out, then it would be of great help to the students in large number as the dropout rate is very high amongst those who fail in more than two subjects.
The number of students failing in Class IX and XI is around 10,000 to 11,000 on an average, which includes the maximum number of students failing in two or more than two subjects.
“Students failing in two subjects are already eligible for supplementary exams,” he said. The supplementary exams are held in June every year so that students, who clear the exam, can be promoted to the next class without wasting a year.
This year, around 18,684 students had answered the SSC examination, while 16,952 have appeared for HSSC exams.
