VASCO: Citing manipulations in delimitation of municipal wards, the Aam Admi Party, Vasco unit, has demanded cancellation of the process as it would only benefit the ruling BJP at forthcoming municipal elections.
Local AAP coordinator Chandrakant Vast said that on examining the draft copy of Mormugao municipal wards prepared by the office of Mormugao Mamlatdar, it has come to light that the same have been prepared to improve the winning chances of BJP candidates, which he said, “is injustice to other candidates.”
He was addressing reporters in Vasco after submitting a memorandum to the Director of Municipal Administration, on Tuesday.
The new delimitation proposes to add five more wards to the existing 20 of Mormugao municipality.
He said the municipality was facing financial crisis, as such was unable to carry out developmental works in all the 20 wards. Under this condition, he said, if five more wards are added then the municipality will have to shoulder an additional burden of paying Rs 8000 each to five more councillors as honorarium.
Casting doubts that five more councillors would guarantee development, Vast said electing more councillors would rather increase corruption in the municipality.
“Therefore, we strongly feel that there is no need for five more wards as the same will not benefit the citizens of the port town,” he said adding “the process, therefore, needs to be cancelled failing which we would initiate public meeting and if required agitation in the form of rasta rook.
