MARGAO:  Members of the Aam Aadmi Party on Monday set afire the Ordinance issued by the Central government on the Amendment to the new Land Acquisition Act.
AAP members assembled in front of the South Goa Collectorate building and protested against the Central government ordinance. A delegation of AAP members later called on the district collector and submitted a memorandum demanding the scrapping of the ordinance.
Ernesto Moraes told the media that the government’s Amendment would mean that now Social Impact Assessment, food security assessment and consent of 70 per cent of land owners will not be required before acquiring land for five broad categories that the government has specified. “This for all practical purposes, we are back to the draconian 1894 Act which peoples movements had fought to change,” Moraes added.
Collector Venancio Furtado told the media that the memorandum submitted by the AAP will be forwarded to the State government for neces
sary action.
