AAP submits memo to Guv

PANJIM: Taking up their cause of highlighting crimes against women and the inefficiency of the Goa Women’s Commission, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday submitted a memorandum to the Governor asking for swift action to be taken in delivering justice to survivors of crimes.

The party said they condemned the lethargy of the State government in curbing the rising cases of crimes against women in Goa, be it on tourists, migrants or locals. “We fail to understand why survivors of crimes, including heinous crimes like the infamous rape of a minor in a school toilet at Vasco, the Camurlim rape and assault case wherein the survivor has now been victimised by the police itself and living in constant fear of the perpetrators, the recent case of the 40-year-old mentally challenged raped at Ribandar, the case of the five-year-old girl raped by a 40-year-old man at Vasco, the kidnapping of two girls from a rehabilitation centre, the issue of trafficking of women for flesh trade as highlighted in the case of the recent gang rape of two Delhi women, to name a few, have been deprived of justice.”
They also questioned the statements of the chief minister and tourism and women and child minister justifying the the case of the Delhi women who were gang raped.
They also questioned the infrastructure and manpower at the women police station.
In the memorandum, AAP convenor Rajeshree Nagarsekar pointed to the Goa State Commission for Women as “adopting a culture of silence against rising crimes in Goa. Despite the fact that the commission of heinous crimes against women under Section 10 of the National Commission for Women Act 1990, there seems to be no action from the commission on the recent spate of crimes.”
AAP demands the governor’s help in initiating action against politicians that “shame Goa and Goans”, in making the commission proactive, in delivering justice to survivors of the crime and have  also suggested formulation of a policy and action plan for ending violence against women.
