MAPUSA: North Goa District Congress Committee President Vijay Bhike on Thursday alleged that hunger strike called by AAP leader Amit Palekar to pressurise the government for demolition of illegal structure at Old Goa heritage site has turned out to be a ‘farce’ that has severely undermined the movement being organised by Save Old Goa Action Committee to ensure the demolition.

Bhike said that Palekar who said he was on an ‘indefinite’ fast until the structure gets demolished quite conveniently and decided to end his fast on the day of feast of St Francis Xavier claiming that an order was issued to the panchayat to demolish the structure. However, the reality is that Palekar’s fast was ended without there being any actual demolition or even an order for demolition, which would have been a bare requirement based on his initial claims. He blamed the AAP government for being directly responsible for the financial crisis in Delhi over non-payment of salaries to teachers, doctors, nurses and other workers.

“AAP coming to Goa is making hefty promises and trying to fool the people here. Congress, which stands for real action and not showmanship, continues to extend its full support to the protesters and will not back down until the ruling government is forced to demolish the structure. Members of the Congress have been and will continue to participate in the satyagraha to demand demolition of the illegal structure,” said Bhike.
