Abandoned, broken-down vehicles remain an eyesore on Margao roads

MARGAO: Contrary to claims by the Margao Traffic Cell and civic body authorities, abandoned vehicles are still seen parked by the side of the highways near Aquem, on the road proceeding towards Davorlim, and

near Maruti Mandir,

among other places across Margao town.

Margao local Ulhas Kerker said that these vehicles have been parked illegally on the roadside for months together, with no action from the authorities concerned. “Due to these vehicles taking up space on the roads, traffic congestion gets worse, and this

also leads to accidents,” said Kerkar.

While the Margao municipality had issued notices to the owners of some of these abandoned vehicles, they have not bothered to remove them yet.

A Margao-based advocate said that the MMC has to invoke Section 122 of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, mandating all unclaimed, damaged and poorly-parked vehicles found hampering pedestrian movement have to be removed. “Sections 127 and 201 of the MV Act empower the concerned authorities to tow away vehicles abandoned or unattended for 10 hours or more in a public place,” he added.
