RIBANDAR: Material for the construction of a retaining wall has been left by the roadside and has hindered traffic along the narrow Panjim-Ribandar road.
According to sources, a contractor was engaged to undertake the construction of the retaining wall towards the Merces side. However, the contractor reportedly left the construction work incomplete due to rains and as a result, sand, gravel and rubble have been lying by the roadside, impeding traffic movement on the narrow road.
Speaking to Herald, a local, Subhash Nasnodkar, blamed the PWD for failing to remove the material lying on the road.
“The PWD has been careless in this regard. When the contractor left the construction work incomplete, it was the responsibility of the PWD officials to have cleared the material, which obstructs the traffic. Who should be held responsible if any major accident takes place at the site,” asked Nasnodkar.
A motorist, Prasad Kundaikar, remarked that the construction material dumped on the narrow road has been a danger to traffic.
“When the construction work was stopped, where was the need to keep the material on the road,” asked Kundaikar.
When contacted, local councillor Pratima Hoble claimed that various authorities are responsible for clearing the construction material from the road.
“It is the responsibility of the National Highways authority, the Traffic Police and the PWD to take the initiative to clear the construction material from the roadside, as it has hindered the smooth flow of traffic. I will take up the matter with authorities concerned,” added Hoble.
