Abandoned vehicles cause traffic chaos and safety concerns in Margao

MARGAO:  The growing trend of abandoning old vehicles, including heavy trucks, along roadsides and public areas in Margao has led to severe traffic congestion and minor accidents. In various locations, particularly on highways and the ring road, loaded trucks have been left unattended, exacerbating the traffic woes in the area.

A recent survey conducted by relevant authorities identified numerous abandoned vehicles dotting Margao’s roads. While some heavy vehicles have been removed, the practice of leaving these vehicles on the roadside persists. Social worker Ulhas Kerker expressed concerns about the parked trucks, emphasizing that the contents of these trucks are unknown, and drivers simply abandon them without consideration for traffic flow.

Kerker also highlighted the impact on traffic congestion and safety, as these abandoned vehicles hinder the smooth movement of vehicles. The situation is particularly dire on

the eastern bypass, specifically from the Arlem Circle to Davorlim.

Margao, witnesses a high influx of people from South Goa who visit the town for shopping. The surge in vehicles entering the town, coupled with unclaimed vehicles obstructing roadways and highways, has become a pressing issue.

Officials from the traffic cell acknowledged that unclaimed vehicles have led to traffic jams and security concerns, particularly on the outskirts and internal roads. According to a senior traffic inspector, vehicles left in one place for over 24 hours without the owner taking steps for repair or removal are considered abandoned under Motor Vehicles Rules. Penalties can be imposed on the

owners under the relevant provisions.

During months of observation, officials found several vehicles left abandoned on roadsides for extended periods. The police have communicated with the Chief Officer of the Margao Municipal Council and other relevant authorities to address the issue. While some progress has been made in removing abandoned vehicles, the process is ongoing, and owners will be issued notices to address the situation.
