CALANGUTE: A statue of Abe Faria was inaugurated at Candolim by local MLA Michael Lobo, on Saturday.
The function was attended by Director General of Police Muktesh Chandar, ex-Speaker Thomaznho Cardozo, Professor Elizabeth Vaz, Calangute ZP member Shawn Martin, and Parish Priest Cipriano D’Silva.
On the occasion, Lobo promised to make Candolim a modern, clean and traffic free village. He disclosed that a new bypass from Nerul to Baga via Calangute would be constructed to reduce the traffic entering into Candolim and Calangute.
“The Sinquerim plateau will be reserved for greenery heritage under no development zone,” Lobo said.
Eulogising Faria, Cardozo said, he “should get recognition at the national level. Indian government should introduce postal stamps in honour of Faria and every year on May 31, Candolim people should conduct a programme to commemorate his birth anniversary.”
