PANJIM: The Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) will try to seek extension of police remand of Head Constable Sanjay Talkar, who has been arrested in connection with an alleged bribery and extortion case, when he will be produced before the District Principal Sessions Judge on April 18.
Talkar, of the Tiracol Coastal Police Station, an accused in the alleged bribery and extortion, was arrested and remanded to five days in police custody. His custody ends on April 18, 2024, and as per the sources, the ACB will try to get extension of his custody as more information is required take the case to logical conclusion as there are names of two other Police Inspectors allegedly feature in the complaint filed by Pruthvi H N, an adventure sports operator from Arambol, Pernem.
Talkar was arrested by the ACB in connection with the alleged extortion of Rs 8,000 and currently he is in police custody.
Few days after arrest of Talkar, another cop, Head Constable Udairaj alias Raju Kalangutkar, of the Tiracol Coastal Police Station, too was arrested in connection with the alleged bribery and extortion case. He was remanded to six days in police custody on Tuesday.
Kalangutkar was arrested by the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Monday in connection with the alleged bribery and extortion case. Later, the police department suspended Kalangutar from service.
O Heraldo on its Sunday edition (April 7) had highlighted the story of cops demanding their pound of flesh to let Pruthvi H N to carry on with his trade since December 2023. Pruthvi operates a paraglider-low panorama adventure sports activity at Keri-Pernem.
The head constable approached Pruthvi and allegedly told him that his business activity was illegal and that he was directed by his boss at the Tiracol Coastal Police Station to seize his glider. Sources in the police stated the no nonsense SP has given clear instructions to the IO Melito Fernandes and DySP Rajan Nigalye to weed out black sheep in uniform from the force as they mar the touristic image of the State and directed the officials concerned to follow the law in letter in spirit so as to serve as a deterrent to others before they indulge in such crimes. It is reportedly learnt, the arrest of two head constables is just the tip of the iceburg and more skeletons may tumble from the allegedly corrupt Tiracol Coastal Police Station closet.
