Margao: South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha has requested the State Government to accord top priority to the meat transport into the State to avoid further contamination and price spike due to waiting at the borders.
Sardinha said, “I am very happy that the Goans, who are stranded in other parts of the country and world, are being brought back through various modes of transport. As usual they will be quarantined, the centre should be well equipped with medical aid and sanitised properly and drivers who come should be medically examined”.
“The seafarers should be quarantined only once for 14 days and for free and after that they should be allowed to go home,” he said.
As far as the goods coming to Goa, Sardinha said “There are two types of goods – perishable and non-perishable, priority has to be given to the meat among the perishable goods, I say this because if the meat stays for too long at the entry point of the State it will contaminate. Those who bring the meat, won’t throw it out, but will sell it to Goan consumers and they will suffer”.
“The cost will also go up because of shortage and what goes up never comes down. Beef and Mutton are examples,” said Sardinha.
“Second priority should be accorded to fish, third to milk and fourth to vegetables,” he urged. Speaking on water, electricity, fuel and liquor hike, he said, “People have suffered enough during the pandemic, don’t punish them more. Whatever Central funds allocated to the State Government should be utilised properly and used judiciously”.
“It is unfortunate that a Goan family was tested positive in the hospital. This should not happen as they should have better testing facilities at the borders to avert the threat at the border itself. They should be treated in the GMC in isolation,” he added.
