MARGAO:  The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) has asked various government departments to initiate action against those establishments found discharging sewage into the stormwater drains.

It may be recalled that MMC had earlier issued a public notice asking all commercial and residential establishments to stop discharging raw sewage into storm water drains, failing which it had threatened to initiate drastic action against the errant parties, which included disconnecting their water connections. MMC had also asked the owners of the defaulting premises to take corrective action by connecting their sewage to the underground sewerage network through the PWD or through any other appropriate methods.

MMC had also issued notices to a number of such establishments including hotels and restaurants and even imposed fines of Rs 5,000 on some of them.

The MMC has now written letters to the other authorities such as the Margao Urban Health Centre (UHC), the Public Works Department (PWD), the Power Department, the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) and the Sewerage and Infrastructural Development Corporation of Goa (SIDGIL) to take action against such errant establishments.

However, a group of hoteliers had recently approached the MMC Chief Officer Rohit Kadam and pointed out that there are areas where the PWD has not yet laid the underground sewerage line and have questioned why they should face action in such cases.
