PANJIM: Raising serious apprehensions about the alleged nexus between politicians, police and drug peddlers, Leader of Opposition Digamber Kamat on Sunday urged the Government to act before Goa is branded as “drug destination.”
In a press statement issued, Kamat has urged Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant to act before the ‘Bhasmasura of Drugs’ converts Goa into ashes.
“The whole of Goa knows about the drug menace which has hit the State. The drugs have reached in far remote areas of this tiny State. It is high time that government takes this issue seriously before it’s too late,” Kamat said.
“Let us not brand Goa as ‘’drug destination’,” the former chief minister added.
Kamat raised serious concerns on the flourishing drug trade in Goa. “I had raised serious apprehensions about the alleged nexus between politicians, police and drug traders and peddlers in Goa and had demanded thorough inquiry into seizure of drugs from localities like Campal in Panjim etc,” he said.
Urging the political parties to stand united to eliminate the demon of drugs, Kamat said that everyone should realise that drugs can finish everything and needs to be vigilant.
Meanwhile, continuing its demand for inquiry into the death of two tourists at Sunburn EDM venue, the Congress workers on Sunday called on Superintendent of Police North Utkarsh Prasoon, who assured them to look into the matter.
A delegation of Congress workers led by Goa Pradesh Youth Congress Committee President Varad Mardolkar met Prasoon demanding that permission given to Sunburn organisers should be immediately revoked. They also suspected that the death of two Andhra tourists was due to drug overdose.
Speaking to media persons later, Mardolkar said that similar instances of deaths due to drug overdose were reported at Sunburn Festival in the past too, and government ignored it despite concern raised by them.
“Two deaths of Andhra Pradesh based tourists on Friday is a clear indication that the narcotics are being paddled during the festival. We have demanded that the permission granted to Sunburn be revoked immediately,” he said.
“Goa is already earning bad repute due to existence of drugs. We can’t allow image of the State to be tarnished further,” he said.
Mardolkar said that SP has assured them to look into their demands.
Youth Congress had on Sunday petitioned Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant demanding that Sunburn organisers be booked for the death and they should be blacklisted from hosting any music event in Goa in future.
