MARGAO: Highlighting the rampant destruction of Vagator Beach, the photos of which have gone viral on social media, Congress’ Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco on Saturday, on behalf of Goans, requested Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant, Minister for Environment and the police to act immediately.

Reginaldo demanded that the persons involved in the rampant destruction of the beach be punished.

He said that the pictures depict breaking of the original structures that existed by reconstructing new one.

“In addition, there has been simultaneous construction of an illegal road, which leads to the beach. All these illegal activities are against the enforced Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) norms. Last week, the JCB machinery too was seen operating in full swing both at the Vagator Beach and on its seashore. All these aforesaid illegal activities are very much within the No Development Zone (NDZ) of Vagator Beach,” Reginaldo informed.

“The damage to the beach has to be stopped for good. The people who are involved in this environmentally catastrophic project at Vagator must be booked and punished severely for flouting the CRZ norms,” he demanded.

“It seems that the continuous lockdown imposed since March 24 in Goa whose only aim was to control the spread of COVID-19 pandemic, has been ironically used to destroy Goa’s forests (Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary and Mollem National Park), Goa’s CRZ areas (Vagator Beach), converting Goa into a coal hub etc,” Reginaldo claimed.
