Inspector General of Prisons Mihir Vardhan today said that action against the four jail guards responsible for attempting to loot a truck driver last week has been reserved till the police report.
Four jail guards – Ankush Naik, Vishal Naik, Keshav Naik and Dinesh Warang attached to the Central Jail at Aguada were arrested on Sunday early morning.
They are alleged for attempting to loot a truck driver by assaulting him on Panaji-Ponda highway, late on Saturday night.
“It’s a lengthy procedure. We just can’t take action without knowing the facts. We are waiting for the police report after which we will decide on what could be done,” Vardhan said.
It is reportedly learnt that the jail guards, who joined the Jail administration only a year ago were off-duty when they allegedly committed the offense.
Ponda town Police Inspector C L Patil had informed that the jail guards were caught assaulting and trying to loot a truck driver by stopping the vehicle on the highway.
A Police Control Room (PCR) van patrolling the area noticed the commotion and approached the truck.
The quartet tried to escape but was however caught a distance away. “They were dressed in black t-shirts and pants, similar to any robber so that they can hide or escape in the dark,” said a police official.
