Activists prepare for BRICS civil society consultation

PANJIM: Civil society organizations met in preparation for the BRICS civil society consultation scheduled in Delhi in October. About 50 members of civil society and social movements from seven western states discussed people’s issues which they feel should be taken up by BRICS.

PANJIM: Civil society organizations met in preparation for the BRICS civil society consultation scheduled in Delhi in October. About 50 members of civil society and social movements from seven western states discussed people’s issues which they feel should be taken up by BRICS.
The organizations hope their views will be incorporated in the final document prepared by the diplomats attending the BRICS conference to be held in Goa in October.
With approximately 50 percent of the world’s poor and 46 percent of the world’s labour force in BRICS countries, Amitabh Behar of Wada Na Todo Abhiyan said it was important for civil society to have a specific space.
He said Indian civil society organizations had networked with similar organizations in other countries. This would be the second such event to be held. The objectives of the consultations are to influence the agenda and outcome of BRICS process, influence the process to institutionalize the ‘Civil BRICS’ and raising awareness among civil society about these global process and their impact on lives and the economy.
