PONDA: Bhoma-Adcolna Deputy Sarpanch Damodar Naik has assured villagers that the panchayat will protect fields in the village by not allowing the proposed bypass to pass through the fields.

It may be recalled that one group of farmers on Sunday had requested the State government for a NH-4A bypass through the fields, as they had feared the demolition of several houses in the area.

However, another group of farmers on Wednesday objected to the demand of bypass through the fields and demanded the widening of the existing NH4A highway passing through the village.

“I am aware of the fact that much of the agricultural land is under cultivation and it has to be protected. When the issue of the bypass passing through the fields had come up, I had suggested taking all farmers into confidence. As expected, majority of the farmers were averse to the idea of allowing the bypass through the fields”, Deputy Sarpanch Damodar Naik told Herald.

“Farming activity is the sole livelihood for many farmers in our Panchayat and as such, I am also against the bypass road passing through the fields. Some people have feared that numerous houses will be demolished, but the transport minister has assured me that only a few houses will be demolished. There is also a proper rehabilitation plan and there is no threat to the religious structures from our village,” he added.
