Giving a tour of the area to media persons, the minister said that while the MCI had given the college till January 1, 2016 to have the buildings in place, the work would be complete before the academic year begins on September 1 this year. “85% of the lecture halls, 90% of the girl’s hostel is ready, both of which will be complete by July 31. The auditorium is 50%complete and will be ready by October 31. People have constantly questioned whether we would be able to complete it in time, but we will,” he said. The lecture halls will have a built up area of 3610.63 sq mts consisting of two lecture halls of 300 seating capacity and one of 350 seats. The girl’s hostel with a built up area of 4712.75 sq mts will contain 108 rooms with double occupancy while the examination hall cum auditorium with a built up area of 3056 sq mts will have a seating capacity of 500 students.
D’Souza also pointed out that the contractors were paid for the work they had completed and that there was no outstanding amount to be paid. The Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (GSIDC) has so far paid the contractors over Rs 20 crore while work worth Rs 10 crore was still pending.
He, however, pointed out to the lack of a specialised labour work force and the monsoons for the delay in completion. “Since we don’t have the sort of labour force required in the State we have had to rely on neighbouring states for the specialised work. The monsoon too hindered efforts to finish the work on time. But we are happy to say that there is no outstanding amount to be paid to contractors for the work they’ve completed,” he said.
