Admitting serious corona patients to GMC will infect wards: MLA

MARGAO: Congress’ Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco on Monday warned the Health Department and the Government that admitting serious corona patients to Goa Medical College and Hospital at Bambolim will definitely infect all the medicine wards/other wards of State’s lone government tertiary hospital.

He said “GMC has patients with very serious health complications/surgeries and the State government’s drastic decision to shift critical coronavirus patients from ESI hospital (presently functioning as COVID-19 hospital) to GMC wards No 145, 146 and 147 will have ill effects on other patients.”

“It is given to understand that around 19 doctors and 20 plus nurses have already tested positive and most of these doctors are above 54 years. It is really sad to note that GMC will be the only government tertiary hospital in India where serious patients of COVID-19 will be also  admitted and sharing the facility with most of the other non-COVID patients,” said Reginaldo

“Goenkars are keen to know whether the State government has given a thought to the fact that hundreds of visit the OPD and everyday patients are kept on trolleys for want of beds, so where will these non-coronavirus patients be shifted? What about blood samples and the laundry which will go the usual way thereby infecting the whole of GMC,” he questioned.

“It may be noted that the State Government is least interested to take feedback and suggestions from the Opposition to fight the spike in coronavirus cases in Goa. I state again that we need dedicated COVID-19 hospital/s in North Goa too. Why is the State government not converting the existing government hospitals in Valpoi and Sanquelim with all facilities where COVID patients can be treated instead of shifting patients to GMC and easing its load,” he asked.
