Adv Aires convicted for defaming woman, obtains stay against order

PANJIM: The Mapusa Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) Court on Thursday sentenced social activist Adv Aires Rodrigues to simple imprisonment for outraging the modesty of a woman and the court later stayed its sentence allowing Rodrigues to go for further appeal against the order.

It may be recalled that Rodrigues was alleged of having linked the complainant woman to an alleged sex scandal and the FIR was registered against him on November 27, 2017 at the Anjuna Police Station.

The FIR was transferred to the Crime Branch within a week by the IGP citing the gravity of the offence and to ensure a professional investigation with directions to the SP Crime that the case be assigned to a competent Inspector.

After investigation for three years and a trial for nearly a year, the Mapusa JMFC had on Thursday sentenced Adv Rodrigues to one year simple imprisonment. The order was stayed in the evening by the court allowing Rodrigues to appeal in a higher court.
