MARGAO: Complaining that a portion of an agricultural field at Rumdier- Nuvem affected by the invasive hyacinth has turned into the waste dumping ground, the locals on Monday urged the concerned authorities to maintain strict vigil in the area.
Herald visited the spot on Monday after a few residents complained of the nuisance caused due to the dumping of waste which caused the entire area to stink. The locals complained that the waste is dumped here mostly late evening or at night.
“The dumping of waste including wet waste and food has been going on for many months. We are finding it very difficult even to cross the road here due to the unbearable stench”, complained Peter Fernandes, who was passing by when Herald visited the spot.
Another local said this is nothing new as the dumping of waste goes unnoticed as the area is covered by the invasive hyacinth.
“It’s an unpleasant situation here. But if one tries to look what lies beneath the hyacinth he/she will be shocked to see the waste dumped in huge quantities”, he claimed.
Locals said the waste can be seen during the morning and evening hours, and even by the roadside near the spot.
The locals urged the concerned authority, especially the Nuvem Panchayat to maintain a strict vigil at the spot. The residents opined that lifting the waste in the morning will not solve the issue. The culprits will continue to dump waste, if no timely action is taken.
They demanded that the agricultural field be cleaned before it leads to major health hazard in the area.
