SANGUEM: Five years after it was purchased, the garbage compactor of Sanguem Municipal Council (SMC) was finally registered on Tuesday and will be put to use after a trial run.

Addressing a press conference, SMC Chief Officer Pramod Dessai said the council had purchased the garbage compactor in 2008 at a cost of Rs 32.5 lakh. However, the garbage compactor was neither registered with the RTO nor used for the purpose for which it was procured.

“Incidentally, though the Vigilance Department had initiated an inquiry into the purchase of the garbage compactor, the inquiry is still pending,” claim Dessai.

The garbage compactor was reportedly lying at the company workshop in Vasco for last several months even before its use and it was only after Dessai enquired into the matter, the compactor was brought back to the council some days ago.

Dessai also informed that since his taking over charge as the chief officer, some sort of discipline is brought in the council office with every officer being made accountable for specific works. The paper work in the council is allocated department wise to make the people avail better services.

On the issue of garbage disposal, he said the council is in the process of finalizing an alternate site as the present site chosen by the council is in the residential area. The council is likely to acquire land touching the present garbage disposal site used by the Curchorem Cacora Municipal Council, which is on the Sanguem-Curchorem border.

“A proposal either to repair the existing hearse van or to purchase a new hearse van is also in the pipeline,” informed Dessai.

The dream project of having a spacious administrative building for SMC is also in the offing. He said the construction of the new building to house the council will be undertaken under the Golden Jubilee funds.

The press conference was attended by SMC Chairperson Changuna Salgaonkar, Vice Chairperson Shaikh Imtiaz and Councillors Dr Revansiddh Naik, Francisca Lima and Agnelo Da Costa.
