After 55 years, Kalay school gets solar power supply

SANGUEM: The Government Primary School at Costi ward of Kalay Panchayat in Sanguem finally got power supply after 55 years of its existence.
The school located in the interior of the village was inaugurated by the government way back in the year 1963 for the benefit of the villagers, most of whom were children of mining dependents.
However, since the time of it opening, the school lacked power and drinking water supply.
The frequent requests made by the villagers to the government authorities for providing water and electricity connection to the school fell on deaf ears and the school continued to function without the power and drinking water supply.
A couple of months back, this was brought to the notice of the panchayat member of neighbouring Sanvordem Panchayat Sanjay Naik, who after studying the problem assured to solve the electricity supply problem by providing solar power to the School. Accordingly, Sanjay Naik made arrangements for Solar power equipment costing around Rs 1 lakh to be installed in the village and accordingly got the same installed in the school premises early last week thereby providing the much needed electricity to the school.
The initiative taken by Naik is widely appreciated both by parents and the student community.
The installation ceremony of the solar panels in the school premises was attended by Sanjay Naik besides ex-sarpanchas of Kalay Baishail Naik and Sarita Gaonkar. School Headmaster Madekar also attended the function.
On the occasion, ex-PTA President Sugar Bhandari complemented Sanjay Naik for installing solar power in the school, which he said would go a long way for the benefit of the students.
Bhandari lamented that the government authorities failed to provide the basic necessity to the school even after several requests by PTA.
Meanwhile, the school also lacks drinking water supply. Though the authorities have made provision of supplying drinking water to the school by laying a water pipeline up to the school premises, the school is not yet provided with drinking water supply, informed Bhandari.
Former Sarpanch Sarita Gaonkar also spoke on the occasion and thanked Sanjay Naik for the initiative.
