PANJIM: After almost five years, Goa’s 40 elected lawmakers will attend the longest session of the State Legislative Assembly – the Monsoon Session, which is set to commence from July 18. The session will have 18 business sittings – the second longest since 2019, when the House met for 20 days.
Goa Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai has summoned the Legislative Assembly to meet at Assembly hall on July 18, at 11.30 am. The session, which will witness passing of the State Budget 2023-24 will conclude on August 10.
A detailed analysis had shown the shrinking graph of the Goa Legislative Assembly since March 2019 – ever since Chief Minister Pramod Sawant took over the reins of the State, with the House meeting only for a total of 63 days, which includes some single day or a five-day sitting to meet the Constitutional obligations.
The data, as available on the Goa Legislative Assembly website, shows that it was only in 2019 (since Sawant-led government came to power) – that the House had a maximum 22 days sitting that included one-day session in March, wherein Sawant had to prove his majority followed by another single day session in June, to elect the Goa Assembly Speaker.
The Monsoon Session held in July-August was the longest with MLAs meeting on 20 days.
