PANJIM: Lying neglected for years, the new municipal market complex in Panjim is finally going to get a facelift.
Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) Mayor Rohit Monserrate said, “We are planning to renovate our market as every city deserves to have a beautiful market. Our market has been neglected for quite some time. We are also planning on re-doing the fish market and also the sopo area.”
He said that the refurbishment work will begin immediately post monsoon and added that the CCP will prepare the tender document in the next two months.
Councillor Bento Lorena, who is the chairman of the CCP’s market committee, informed that a prominent architect is being taken on board to prepare designs to carry out refurbishment work of the market complex.
“The area in the market complex which is occupied by flower vendors looks dull and we see less people visiting that part of the complex. Our aim is to make it lively so that customers are attracted, we also want to ensure proper ventilation in the market complex,” Lorena said.
He further said that before the monsoon progresses, the CCP will replace the damaged roof sheets of the fish market.
“Those roof sheets which are damaged will be replaced at the earliest. We are also going to clean the drains in the surrounding area of the fish market as waterlogging is reported every monsoon,” Lorena added.
Meanwhile, fish vendors have urged the CCP Mayor Rohit Monserrate to consider providing them with larger space to conduct their business when the CCP builds a new fish market by demolishing the existing one which has been declared “unsafe”.
