After encroachments, MMC cracks whip on handcarts

MARGAO, JULY 18
In a surprise raid, the Margao Municipality Council seized around 30 handcarts moving around the city on Saturday.
The raid comes a day after the Civic body cleared encroachments from the Municipal markets, including New Market and Gandhi market.
Margao Municipal Chairperson Savio Coutinho has issued instruction to Market inspector Mohan Arlekar to verify whether the handcarts have the necessary Municipal permission or not.
The instructions assumes significance as it believed that hundreds of handcarts are found moving on the roads and markets, though the permissions issued by the civic body are considerably less in number.
The Market inspector said the documents of the seized hand are being verified even it is believed that even a fake license has been seized from a hawker during the raid.
MMC Chief Officer, Y B Tawde told Herald that the market inspector is verifying the licenses from the hawkers, even as he admitted that licenses are being misused to operate even 4-5 handcarts on a single license.
