After immersion, idols wash ashore at Colva beach

Panjim: Ganesh idols that were immersed after one and a half
days of festive celebrations have tragically washed ashore on Colva beach in a
stark reminder of environmental concerns.

Traditionally, Ganesh idols are immersed in ponds or lakes
to symbolize the cycle of creation and dissolution in nature. However, idols
made of Plaster of Paris (PoP) do not align with this ancient tradition and
pose a significant environmental threat. PoP idols, when submerged, leach
harmful substances into the water, adversely affecting the ecosystem by
reducing oxygen levels and harming fish and other aquatic life.

Local authorities and environmentalists have sounded the
alarm, urging the public to opt for clay idols that are eco-friendly. These
clay idols not only adhere to tradition but also play a pivotal role in
reducing water pollution, ensuring that the sanctity of nature is preserved
during the Ganesh festival.
