MARGAO: In a shocking revelation, several rainwater gutters in Margao are filled with raw sewage, causing a significant health hazard for the people who live and work in the commercial capital. Concerned citizens are demanding urgent action to clean the gutters and prevent the continuous discharge of untreated sewage into drains meant only for rain water.
The gutters around the South Goa Police headquarters in Margao are particularly affected, emitting a foul stench that permeates the entire area. Notably, waste water from the police canteen is seen overflowing from these gutters, posing an inconvenience to students from nearby educational institutions.
Parents waiting for their children near the malodorous gutters expressed their frustration, emphasising the difficulty students face in navigating the footpath contaminated with sewage. Alex Rodrigues, a parent, called on the Margao Municipal Council to address the issue promptly to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
“The stench here is unbearable, and parents are left with no choice but to endure it while waiting for their children,” complained Rodrigues, urging authorities to stop the flow of sewage and initiate a thorough cleaning of the gutters. Roshni Naik, another parent, pointed out the contradiction between authorities’ health and cleanliness awareness campaigns and the current unsanitary conditions. She highlighted the gutters filled with raw sewage as potential breeding grounds for mosquitoes, urging health authorities to take immediate action to rectify the situation.
Civic body issues notices to two Margao hotels for releasing sewage into drains
MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) has issued show cause notices to two hotels cum restaurants near the Kadamba Bus Stand for releasing sewage into public gutters.
The move comes as authorities work towards enhancing the cleanliness and aesthetics of the area for PM Modi’s upcoming public event at the KTC Bus Stand.
The civic body took action after finding that some hotels were discharging sewage and wastewater directly into public gutters during inspections conducted on Tuesday. Gaurish Sankhwalkar, Chief Officer of MMC, stated that the notices were issued to address the unsanitary conditions. Additionally, instructions have been issued to gaddas operating opposite the KTC bus stand to maintain hygienic conditions, and they will be asked to shut down business operations before the event.
