PANJIM: Four candidates remain in the fray in Panjim and three in Valpoi after scrutiny of nominations for the August 23 by-polls. The last date for withdrawals is August 9.
North Goa Collector Nila Mohanan said that six polling stations are critical in Panjim as they are a cluster of polling stations. She said that 775 persons would be required for the polling process and another 100 for other works related to the polls.
Counting of votes of both constituencies will be held at the Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG) on August 28. “We have identified counting halls and strong rooms and are making necessary arrangements for the same.”
She said that all the teams are functional to enforce the model of code of conduct. “We have flying squads, static surveillance teams, expenditure accounting team, video surveillance teams in place in both constituencies,” she said.
She said the Election Commission has appointed Sukhvinder Singh (IAS) and Amit Chowdhary (IAS) as General Observers of Panjim and Valpoi respectively.
North Goa Superintendent of Police Chandan Chowdhary (IPS) said these is no serious law and order problem in the two constituencies. She said that all the cases registered during the last Assembly election have been disposed off.
As a preventive measure 113 cases have been initiated under Section 107 of CrPC, one under Section 109 CrPC and 18 cases cases under Section 110 CrPC, she said.
She added that two platoons the IRB will be deployed during the polls and three companies of CPMF has been sought.
Chowdhary said there will be nine locations in Panjim and five in Valpoi for pickets. She said that one firearm in Valpoi constituency and 11 in Panjim are yet to be deposited.
