After series of fire incidents, Canacona demands distress management clinic

CANACONA: With Canacona witnessing increasing incidents of residential fires, concerned citizens are seeking their MLA’s attention to help set up an emotional distress management clinic in the taluka. 
The southernmost taluka of Canacona is witnessing a steep rise in cases of structural fires in recent times which involves not only loss of their residence, but also many other things of value such as photo albums, important documents, house hold appliances along with other treasured objects which cause lot of distress to the affected people.
A Canacona resident, who almost lost everything due to an unfortunate incident of accidental fire to his house, told this correspondent that there is an urgent need for distress management clinic in such cases.
“I brought it to the attention of our MLA Isidor Fernandes and explained about the distress my entire family is going through as we lost everything in front of our eyes. This incident has left us and my young children disturbed mentally which needs treatment,” he said.
When this correspondent asked for his opinion, Isidor Fernandes said that in fact there should be sessions held for the family members to recover from the shock and trauma and that he would immediately take it up with the ministry concerned.
Meanwhile, fire and emergency office in Canacona had to attend to another fire call in which a house at Chiplem, Poinguinim had caught fire on Wednesday evening. 
Duty staff lead by leading fire fighter Tulshidas Desai accompanied by driver operator Ashok Gaonkar, and fire fighters Anil Talpankar and Vasant Velip worked laboriously and managed to extinguish the fire in an operation that lasted over an hour.
Sources said that the fire set for the grass accidentally spread to the adjoining house; the fire caused a loss of over Rs 4 lakh to the owner of the house while timely intervention by fire crew saved property worth over Rs 10 lakh from getting destroyed.
