PANJIM: The government has decided to undertake a medical audit of state-run Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) on priority.
Health Minister Vishwajit Rane on Tuesday conducted a surprise inspection of GMC, during which he observed a high volume of patients at the medical facility, which caters to patients from neighbouring Sindhudurg and Karwar regions as well.
In a series of tweets post inspection, Rane on Wednesday said that the medical audit of GMC will be conducted on top priority. “Assessment of health facilities, including prudent administrative and infrastructural reforms is crucial for attaining a robust health system,” he said.
Rane said that the necessary instructions were given to the GMC team headed by Dean Dr Shivanand Bandekar to start the process to decongest the hospital on priority. The Minister has decided to put up a protocol to shift cardiac patients as well.
“After observing a high volume of patients at GMC, I have directed to transfer patients to Super Specialty Block. Necessary instructions have been given to assign three wards to Medicine Department due to the high volume of patients,” he tweeted. Rane has warned to take action against the doctors who refer patients to GMC, in spite that the patient can be treated at the peripheral centres or sub-district hospitals.
The Secretary of Health has been given the necessary instructions to take action against the doctors. He said that the GMC is in need of a facility management agency and the proposal would be placed before the Chief Minister, to ensure top-line service to the patients.
The Covid antigen test will be mandatory for patients before getting admitted to GMC.
