Agalli instead of Aquem infuriates oppn councillors

MARGAO: There seems no dearth of controversies surrounding Margao Municipal door-to-door waste collection project.

MARGAO: There seems no dearth of controversies surrounding Margao Municipal door-to-door waste collection project.
A day after the Civic body started the exercise in Agalli ward represented by former chairperson Arthur D’Silva, the Municipal administration faced the heat from opposition councillors on Wednesday, as they demanded to know the criteria for starting the drive in Agalli instead of Aquem.
Councillor Berta Cardozo even went to the extent of saying that the last minute shifting of the exercise from Aquem to Agalli was done without creating awareness amongst households in her ward and without taking her into confidence.
Councillor Tito Cardozo said the change has sent a wrong signal to the citizens at large that the city fathers are incapable of handling the door-to-door exercise.
An agitated Councillor Damu Shirodkar demanded to know from Sawant why the civic body skipped his Aquem ward when he along with Municipal officials had raised awareness in the area a week ago.
The chief officer however parried all media questions saying manpower constraints could not permit the civic body to start the exercise in all the municipal wards. He maintained that the MMC proposal for 200 workers has got the clearance from the DMA and that the door-to-door waste collection exercise will be carried out in all wards once the civic body receives the men and machinery.
Many of the opposition councillors said they were sure that this particular move was done to make them appear incompetent in the eyes of their supporters and the residents of the ward they represent. They further pointed that awareness was already raised on the door-to-door garbage collection drive in Aquem and launching it in Agalli did not make much sense.
