Agasaim unites to oppose cellphone tower

AGASAIM: At a special gram sabha organised by the Agasaim village panchayat, it was unanimously decided to oppose the construction of a cellphone tower in the village.

After acquiring a plot of land in a private property, the concerned authorities of a mobile company were all set to raise a mobile tower in the village. The pit was dug and raw material was dumped at the site.

But when the villagers realized that the mobile tower was coming up within the residential area, they objected to it.

Prior to this gram sabha, two meetings were held at the panchayat office in the presence of the sarpanch, panchass and locals. After carrying out a signature campaign in the village, a letter was forwarded to the concerned authorities.

After a discussion about the pros and cons with regards to the mobile tower in the village, a resolution was passed seeking opposition to its construction.

Apart from objections raised towards the construction of the mobile tower, Secretary Basilio Pires informed that the new material recovery facility site of Antonio Afonso (survey number 103/3) has already been approved, which has been given by ex-sarpanch, James Afonso.

Pires said that all formalities have been completed, except the agreement which needs to be finalized. The panch members demanded that the agreement be done on priority basis.
