A group of locals who are getting affected due to the construction had a meeting on Sunday at Agassaim to raise objections over a process which, they allege, carelessly followed by the government.
The meeting has concluded with the decision to hit the streets if the demands and the doubts of the people of Agassaim are not cleared before Nov 4.
Locals have said that the government has not served any personal notices to the individuals whose property and houses are coming under the shadow of bridge construction.
Agassaim Sarpanch James Afonso told Herald that work of the bridge has already started whereas the people of the village are not informed about anything.
“The local panchayat has not been taken into confidence. We have no knowledge except for whatever has appeared in media,” Afonso said.
“We are not against the development of the State, but the affected people should be dealt with in a proper way. So far, only verbal assurances have been given, but nothing has come on the papers to the people,” he said adding, “There are 30 houses getting affected and half of them are completely going for demolition. Adding to that, the fields are also coming under the bridge.”
Triza Fernandes, a local, informed that the construction of the bridge has started on her property whereas she is not aware of any acquisition of her property.
She said that two chapels would also be demolished as per the proposed plan of the public works department.
Suraj Verlekar, another local, said that in an advertisement the government had given only 21 days to raise objections, which was insufficient for the villagers.
Sarpanch Afonso on behalf of on the villagers has demanded immediate stopping of the work and to address the grievance of the people.
He said that people who are affected should be relocated and compensated before the construction work should start as assured by PWD minister to the villagers.
The 650 meter longs, eights lane cable-stayed bridge over river Zuari will connect North Goa to South Goa. The projects is estimated to cost Rs 2700 crore and expected to complete on three years. The bridge has approximately 450-meter long approach road from both the sides.
