MARGAO, SEPT 7
The district authorities have finally set in motion the process to put in place a district traffic plan for South Goa.
District Magistrate G P Naik on Tuesday issued directions to Sub-Divisional Magistrate and representatives of various government agencies to suggest proposals to formulate a traffic policy for the entire district. They have been set a time frame to formulate the proposals before a policy is drawn up for implementation by the government. District Magistrate G P Naik told Herald after the meeting that the district traffic regulatory committee will also be reconstituted following instructions of the Chief Minister. Besides officials of various agencies, representatives of NGOs, including association of architects, engineers will find a place on the district traffic regulatory committee, Naik said.
He said that since it will take some time for the reconstitution of the new committee, the SDMs and other agencies have been directed at today’s meeting to set the process in motion and submit traffic proposals for implementations. “All these agencies have been told to come up with proposal for the regulation of traffic in their respective areas. They have been further directed to proposed issuance of notifications and denotification to streamline traffic in their respective jurisdiction”, he added.
Replying to a question, Naik said that major decisions, whose implementations require funds would be forwarded to the government for a policy decision, adding that minor changes will be implemented by the district authorities.
“The question of by-passes, construction of new traffic islands, widening of roads at sharp turns and removal of obstructions along the accident prone areas will be looked into by the agencies before mooting suggestions”, he added.
The decision to reconstitute the district traffic regulatory committee came against the backdrop of the inspection of certain roads in the commercial capital by Chief Minister Digambar Kamat following complaints of acute traffic congestion.
