PANJIM: All Goa Government and Semi-Government Retired Employees Union (AGGSGREU) on Thursday decided to organise a long march from Pollem to Panjim and Tiracol to Panjim and continue their struggle if substantive compensation to prematurely retired employees is not resolved by the government.
Addressing the media, All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), General Secretary, Christopher Fonseca said, “In 2004 the BJP government led by then Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar took a sudden decision to terminate the services and compulsorily retire all government employees who had completed 58 years of service and termed this exercise as its ‘New Superannuation Policy’.”
He added, “Faced with this drastic decision, government employees rose in protest and demanded that the government reverse its premature retirement policy since such a policy was not part of the service conditions of the workers since the retirement age of government employees was 60 years.”
The government thereafter reverted the retirement age to 60.
