BICHOLIM: In a spirited demonstration of ownership, locals of Mulgao took a stand after a public hearing concerning mining by erecting a sign board near Mulgao lake on Independence Day. The board proclaims the lake as the rightful property of the village communidade. Amidst slogans of ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ and ‘Amcho Gaanv-Tali-Devlaan-Shet Amka Jaay’ (we want our village, lakes, temples, and fields), villagers voiced their sentiments.
The gathering included Communidade’s chairman Vishalsen Gaad, Mulgao sarpanch Trupti Gaad, temple committee’s chairman Vasant Gaad, farmers’ committee’s chairman Prakash Parab, other panch members, and local residents.
Vasant Gaad, chairman of the temple committee, highlighted the dire threat faced by the 16,000 sq meter lake, highlighting its role in sustaining local fields and agriculture. The impact of mining sludge since 2012 has disrupted farming, prompting the need for action to protect communal resources.
Vishalsen Gaad, chairman of the Communidade, lamented the devastation that the mining operations have brought upon all the three lakes in the village, which have been vital water sources for farming and the community.
Prakash Parab, chairman of the farmers’ committee, echoed the sentiments by demanding the exclusion of all three lakes from mining leases, citing their significance as crucial water reservoirs for both the village and agriculture.
Sarpanch Trupti Gaad, while expressing solidarity with the villagers, called for justice by advocating for the transfer of ownership of all lakes to the local community. The resolute stance of the Mulgao residents underscores their commitment to safeguarding their communal heritage in the face of pressing mining concerns.
