PANJIM: Agnelo Cunha and Regha Pai were elected unopposed as Sarpanch and Deputy Sarpanch of Taleigao village panchayat on Thursday.
During the recently held panchayat elections, Atanasio Monserrate backed Progressive Development Front swept the poll by winning all eleven seats. The term of the new panchayat body is for a period of five years.
Taleigao MLA Jennifer Monserrate was present when the panel appointed its new sarpanch and deputy sarpanch.
Speaking to media persons, MLA said that setting up of garbage treatment plant at Taleigao is going to be the priority of the panchayat. “The panchayat body and I will work as a team. The garbage dump at Taleigao plateau has been a nuisance affecting public health. The recent fire at the site has worsened the situation,” she said.
“We don’t want such situation to crop up again. We would expedite setting up of the treatment facility, which we intend to put in operation latest by next monsoons,” Monserrate added.
Newly elected sarpanch also said that the panchayat along with MLA will make a representation to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and Panchayat Minister Mauvin Godinho for government support to set up the facility.
