CANACONA: Aggrieved at the indiscriminate dumping of garbage and erratic water supply, residents carried out a protest rally to Agonda Panchatyat office on Thursday.
Residents blamed the tourism traders including shack operators for indulging in wayward dumping of garbage along village roads, water bodies, residential and forest, burning of wastes including plastics in the open.
Some residents also bitterly complained that high-end shack operators which are mostly run by non-Goans with locals participation are the main culprits in most of the scrupulous garbage dumping noticed in village water bodies, isolated forests covers and even residential areas of Agonda.
Unhappy that operators had not adhered to the systematic disposal of garbage as mentioned in temporary trade license terms and conditions, residents of Igrejawada-Val Aframent ward led a protest rally to the panchayat office on Thursday.
Later, Sports and Tribal Welfare minister Ramesh Tawadkar visited the Agonda Panchayat office and heard the grievances of the aggrieved residents.
Residents also bitterly complained against the lethargic attitude of PWD (Water Supply) for not being able to provide adequate water supply despite having sufficient treated water from the Chapoli dam.
“Residents, especially those living in high-rising residential areas, are unable to get any proper supply of water, while PWD has made no efforts to improve the situation,” a resident told the minister.
Tawadkar heard the grievances and called for a meeting on Saturday with the PWD (water supply) officials, tourism traders including shack owners and the residents to resolve the indiscriminate garbage dumping issue and erratic water supply.
