Agri Dept’s vision is healthy Goa, a wealthy farmer, says minister

MARGAO:  Deputy Chief Minister and Agriculture Minister Chandrakant Kavlekar on Thursday said the State is steadily making progress to adopt modern techniques in farming, with the vision of a healthy Goa, a wealthy farmer, which is expected to attract the new generation. 

He was speaking at the special board meeting of Goa Agriculture Produce and Livestock Marketing Board at Arlem. 

The board will present a memorandum to the government suggesting various income improvement measures which the State is expected to take. 

Providing detailed information on the various schemes of the agriculture department, Kavlekar said under a scheme, the department is promoting community farming at source. 

He said availing a Krishi Card is now made easy to facilitate farming in the State. 

He acknowledged the felicitation of organic cashew growers by Adarsh Krishi Sanstha in Balli headed by Prakash Shankar Velip.

Earlier, Board chairman Prakash Shankar Velip said several revenue generating measures are chalked out to improve the board’s income.

Some measures to improve the revenue of the marketing board were suggested at the meeting which included applying the term market yard to the State boundaries of Goa. 

“This will bring any sale of agriculture products in Goa under the purview of the marketing board,” said Board’s Vice-Chairman Premanand Mhambre. 

He said they are paying employees at par with the 7th Pay Commission scales; hence the salary burden on the board has increased.  

Agriculture Director Nevil Alphonso was also present.
